Border Target Operating Model - How to avoid problems at the border?.

As of 30 April 2024, new UK import control regulations, referred to as the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), were introduced. Understanding and complying with these requirements is crucial for Polish companies to export goods efficiently without unnecessary delays. In this article, we provide key information and tips to help you avoid problems at the border.

Common entry document (CHED) - what is worth knowing?

The CHED document is a mandatory element of import declarations for food, feed, animals and selected plant products. To avoid problems:

  • Fill in the data accurately - Ensure that the destination address follows the guidelines (select 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' and the appropriate region).
  • Ensure compliance with the customs declaration - Commodity codes, weights and quantities must be identical in CHED and in CDS.
  • Avoid linguistic errors - Swap Polish characters (e.g. "ł" for "l") if you prepare documents on a bilingual keyboard.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA)

The introduction of accurate arrival times, such as 06:15 instead of 06:00, helps to avoid delays in the processing of declarations and enables better planning of inspections. The accuracy of the ETA allows for a smoother flow of goods through the border control points.

How to comply with BTOM requirements?

To comply with the new regulations:

  1. Register with IPAFFS - A UK address is required.
  2. Use digital health certificates - They facilitate verification and eliminate the need to present paper documents.
  3. Fill in the import declarations accurately - Provide precise data and verify it before approval.
