Disruptions to crossings such as the Panama and Suez Canals have a huge impact on global supply chains. Access to strategic sea lanes is a key resource for international trade, as seen in the route from New York to San Francisco, which is being shortened by 14,000 km thanks to the canal.
A possible change of jurisdiction over the canal from Panama to the US would have significant implications for the US, China and Latin American countries. Grażyna Jaworska of J.Dauman Logistics warns that toll increases or congestion could affect the global delivery schedule and force companies to choose alternative routes. In turn, Krzysztof Gogol of Polish Shipping notes that high crossing costs, especially for large container ships, are reflected in the prices of goods paid by consumers.
